Why does blizzard lock the ladder

The Ladder Season 4 has come to an end, and the ladders are now locked in order to determine final placements for the season. The hidden ratings used to determine promotions and demotions will continue to be used for matchmaking purposes, and will continue to update even though the season has been locked. So if you play significantly better or worse than your assigned league, you may find yourself in a different league when Season 1 begins after you play your first placement match.

Your games during the lock still count. The first season of ladder competition will begin on Monday, February 1. Season milestone rewards will be locked in at this time, and bonus pools will reset. The game will continue doing matchmaking and league placement using results from the previous season.

That sounds prudent enough…i get it. On the flip side however, that means that folks will not have access to the full game, which may turn off those that have specific builds in mind, and dont like the concept of throwing away a non ladder character and starting over once they have the opportunity to play what they see as the game proper.

On the other hand however, with regards to that prudence with wanting to see how day 1 to day X goes, and waiting for things to settle down…well, we are doing 2 Betas.

Would that not be enough alongside their internal QA to catch those issues that may or may not show? Or…create a toon that is limited in vision to be able to play alongside others…and then cast it aside once Ladder locking opens up. Its a shame, but it is what it is. I would prefer the team unlocks Ladder only items for multiplayer until they get their house in order at least for characters created between Day 1 and Day 1 of Ladder.

Those are more important to me than 99, but seeing your toon on the leaderboard as you play, is still rewarding, that is the whole point of a ranking system They will continue to be locked in ladder, as they should.
