When is whatsapp coming back
Being unable to post on Facebook or Instagram elicited equal parts frustration and relief, with some relishing the break from being constantly connected to our digital lives. Ironically, it's those very social media platforms that allow us to express our collectively mixed feelings about the situation.
We are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible. Outages are nothing new in the online world, and services often go offline or experience slowdowns. Facebook's outage on Monday, however, was unusual in that it struck a suite of the company's products, including its central site and WhatsApp, an encrypted messaging service used widely around the world.
Facebook is deeply enmeshed in global infrastructure and the outage disrupted communications for the company's billions of users. The website and its services are used for everything from casual chatting to business transactions. It isn't immediately clear what caused the issue for the three properties. Security expert Brian Krebs said it appears to be a DNS related-issue , adding that something "caused the company to revoke key digital records that tell computers and other Internet-enabled devices how to find these destinations online.
Cloudflare, a content delivery network that hosts customers data for fast access around the world, had its own explanation of what might have happened.
Facebook's problem involved a combination of two fundamental internet technologies, BGP and DNS, both instrumental to helping computing devices to connect across the network. The Border Gateway Protocol BGP helps establish the best way to send data hopping from one device to another until it reaches its final destination. It is likely that any fixes will take some time to filter out and users could still be hit by problems long after a solution is in place, given the relatively large and unwieldy nature of the infrastructure underpinning a company like Facebook as well as the many other apps it runs.
But even that was a marked improvement from the array of error messages and unloaded pages that greeted users of Facebook and its other services around the world through much of Monday. The technical issues are likely to prove vastly expensive. Facebook gave little indication of what had caused the issue, or how it was eventually fixed. Instead, its employees and official accounts opted to apologise vaguely on Twitter, and promised to do what they could to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.
Similar posts came from the official accounts run for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, as well as its spokesperson Andy Stone. None offered any clear indication of how the problems had begun. That is often referred to as the phone book of the internet, taking the URL a person types into their browser — such as Facebook.

On Sunday, "60 Minutes" aired a segment in which Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed the company is aware of how its platforms are used to spread hate, violence and misinformation, and that Facebook has tried to hide that evidence.
Facebook has pushed back on those claims. The interview followed weeks of reporting about and criticism of Facebook after Haugen released thousands of pages of internal documents to regulators and the Wall Street Journal. In her prepared testimony obtained by CNN on Monday ahead of her appearance before the subcommittee, Haugen said, "I came forward because I recognized a frightening truth: almost no one outside of Facebook knows what happens inside Facebook.
Concerning the outage, Facebook VP of infrastructure Santosh Janardhan said in a statement Tuesday morning that it wanted to "make clear" there was "no malicious activity,". The fact that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all experienced significant issues for around six hours was a major event for many users.
Firms sometimes lose internet connectivity when they update their network configurations, Madory said.
